After she patiently let me photograph her, she flew away and landed on my finger! The host plant of the gulf fritillary is the Passion flower vine (Passiflora spp.).

The cloud forest literally feels as if you are walking in a cloud, with misty days that create a serenity and calmness. This cloud forest is located at Cuerici Biological Station in the Talamonca Mountains, the tallest mountain range in Costa Rica.

This cloud forest is located at Cuerici Biological Station in the Talamonca Mountains, the tallest mountain range in Costa Rica. The cloud forest literally feels as if you are walking in a cloud, with misty days that envoke a serenity and calmness.
rainforestreflections > "Cecropia Sunset" Costa Rica - Osa Peninsula - Corcovado National Park While walking in Corcovado, I saw this view as the sun set over the ocean. Trumpet trees (Cecropia spp.) frame the ocean as the sun descends. Cecropias are one of my favorite trees due to their mutalistic relationship with ants and medicinal properties. Aztec ants (Azteca spp.) live in the trunk of the trumpet tree. Besides this home, the tree also provides the ant with extra floral necteries for the ants to eat. In return, the ant protects the Cecropia tree from predators, preventing any animal that attempts to eat trumpet leaves by stinging and biting them. They also prevent epiphytes and climbers from growing on the tree by eating the vegetation.
